The Lower School uses the Harcourt Brace Math Advantage series. The spiral instruction includes a balance of conceptual understanding, connection to prior knowledge, skill proficiency, and problem-solving experiences. Problem solving and critical thinking skills are the focus of the instruction. The children learn through the teaching of strategies to solve relevant, engaging and meaningful problems. Emphasis is placed on reasoning rather than rote memorization of facts. An ongoing review of previously taught skills ensures proficiency and retention. Math Advantage utilizes all modalities and learning styles. The program correlates well with the annually administered test of the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS).
