Headmaster’s Notes
2 April 2012
Dear Parents:
The pollen is in the air, hay fever is running rampant and Spring has definitely sprung here at school. Please remember to mark Thursday, 3 May 2012 on your calendar. At 6:00PM in the gymnasium we will have our Annual Meeting of the Corporation. I look forward to seeing you there!
If you have not already seen it on the website, www.dailycharger.com, enclosed is the 2012-2013 school year calendar. PLEASE avoid taking vacations that do not match our vacation times. Please also schedule routine medical, dental, and optical appointments during these breaks.
With the recent heavy pollen, a number of students have become ill during school. Please let us know if you will be coming before school ends to pick up your children. We want to be able to have their possessions and materials ready for you by the time you arrive.
Mrs. Smith will have all of the grades’ summer reading books available for purchase after Easter Break. The advantage of purchasing these books now (in addition to convenience) is that you can ensure that your children will have the correct edition of the particular book.
Our fifth grade will hold its annual “Wax Museum” on Thursday, 26 April. If you have a chance, come by and see the impressive work our fifth graders do each year in researching a famous American historical figure.
Upper School students who arrive to school early will need to remain in the vestibule of the main door until 7:45 AM, when all doors will open. Students who would like tutoring before school can make arrangements with any teacher the previous day; that tutoring can begin when the teacher arrives and escorts the student to the particular classroom. The building will be locked again at 3:15 PM and students will need to wait in the vestibule to be picked up. Again, students who would like tutoring beyond that time, or who are in our afternoon study hall will remain in the building with direct teacher supervision. We have had to effect this change due to some shenanigans, and we hope that some of our students will become more mindful of appropriate behavior at school.
If you have Upper School aged students, enclosed with this newsletter is a sheet describing our Summer School courses for the Upper School. Early Years and Lower School aged students will receive a brochure for our popular “Discovery” program later this month. The Discovery program dates this year are: 11-21 June.
The Junior-Senior Prom this year will take place on 14 April. The event is open to all juniors and seniors, and upon invitation from an eleventh or twelfth grader a sophomore may also attend.
AP examinations for high school students will take place from 7-17 May this year. Mrs. Shaw will be contacting families involved in this program with billing information. We are proud of our teachers’ and students’ hard work in this program. Our school boasts one of the highest Equity and Excellence scores in the State, and the percentage of AP Scholars that we have each year is also one of the highest in the State.
Congratulations to all of our award winners in the David Williams Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest. Again this year, Wayne Country Day School swept all grade levels of the contest placing first from fifth to eleventh grades. Congratulations to Tony Barbour, Lauren French, Ben Eisenhauer, Connor Shaw, Rachel Uzzell and Tess Allen. We are thrilled that Lauren’s, Ben’s and Connor’s essays have been selected as District winners and will continue on to the state contest.
Easter Break begins on Friday, 6 April and continues through the resumption of classes on Tuesday, 10 April.
