THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Chartered in 1968, Wayne County Day School’s 40-acre campus includes a main classroom building with two science labs, a computer lab, a media center, a gym, a preschool building, a music building, a pottery studio, and four athletic playing fields. Wayne Country Day admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin. Approximately one fourth of the student body receives need based financial aid.
Faculty members in upper school include graduates from Appalachian State University, Barton College, Boston College, Clark University, Brigham Young University, Duke University, East Carolina University, Foundation College, Harvard University, Meredith College, Mt. Olive College, North Carolina State University, Pennsylvania State University, Salem College, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, West Virginia University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Williams College, and Winthrop College. Faculty honors include local, regional, and state Teacher of the Year, local First Teacher of the Year, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, and several Coaches of the Year. Several upper school faculty members are published writers and have studied abroad in the USSR, France, England, Spain, Mexico, and Canada.
Total enrollment for the 2009 – 2010 school year is 255 with grades 9-12 having 94 students. Wayne Country Day School currently serves students from Greene, Lenoir, Johnston, and Wayne Counties. A significant international student population exists at the Upper School, with students from Canada, Ethiopia, Greece, the Republic of Corea {sic}, the Republic of South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The graduating class of 2010 numbers 19 students. The student body is composed of a significant non-Caucasian population.
Wayne Country Day School is fully accredited by The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It holds membership in the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools and the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association. Affiliations include Southern Association for College Admissions Counseling, The Carolina Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, and The College Board.
CURRICULUM AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The traditional college preparatory curriculum in the upper school includes courses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, modern language, art, computer, drama, and physical education. Daily after school tutorials are offered for every student and is included in WCDS tuition cost.
Advanced Placement Courses offered for the 2009-2010 school year include biology, calculus AB, calculus BC, English language and composition, English literature and composition, music theory, Spanish language, US history, and World history. Honors courses are offered in English, math, chemistry, history, and some modern language selections. Students are selected for these classes on the basis of their interest and teacher recommendation.
Graduation requirements consists of 24 units, distributed as follows: English (4), a semester of composition each year at WCDS (2), mathematics (3), laboratory science (3), social studies (3), modern language (3), arts (1) physical education (1), and four credits of electives. Each semester course earns one-half credit, and a full course earns 1 credit. Classes meet 50 minutes each day.
A minimum of 20 hours of community service per year is required for all upper school students.
STUDENT LIFE
Wayne Country Day School sponsors the following clubs and organizations: Student Government Association, Quiz Bowl, Amity Mentoring Program, Manity Mentoring Program, Art Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National French Honor Society, International Thespian Society, Fellowship of Christian Students, Journalism/Yearbook, History Club, Science Club, and Writing Round Table.
Athletics include baseball, basketball, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Wayne Country Day School has finished in the top ten schools statewide for the Wachovia Cup in six of seven of the past years.
